Historical Society of the Episcopal Church
Manross Lecture at The DeKoven Center
June 17, 2023
All are invited to the historic DeKoven Center in Racine, Wisconsin on the evening of June 17 to attend the Manross Lecture of the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church. The DeKoven Center is located overlooking Lake Michigan on the south side of Racine, between Milwaukee and Chicago. The evening begins with a fellowship, hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner.
John Magerus, PhD
Rev. Dr. Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook
PhD, EdD
For the program, you first learn about the Rev. James DeKoven from John Magerus, PhD. Magerus, archivist emeritus of DeKoven Center, is completing the first full-life biography about DeKoven who was a widely known and respected leader of the Anglo-Catholic movement of the nineteenth century. His addresses to the 1871 and 1874 General Conventions are often credited for bringing a broader understanding of the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist to the attention of the Episcopal Church. DeKoven died in 1879 and is buried on the grounds of the DeKoven Center. In 1964 his name was added to the Episcopal Church calendar for March 22.

The evening’s keynote is the Historical Society’s Manross Lecture by the Rev. Dr. Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook, PhD, EdD. The title is “A New Era in Engaged Anglican & Episcopal History: Memory, Legacies & Embodied Practice,” and all will receive a copy of the paper. Kujawa-Holbrook is a well-known speaker and author in the Episcopal Church and academic community. Editor of the Historical Society’s peer-reviewed journal Anglican and Episcopal History, she is an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Los Angeles, Professor of Practical Theology and Christian History at Claremont School of Theology, Professor of Anglican Studies emerita, Bloy House - the Episcopal School of Theology at Los Angeles, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

The evening will take place in Assembly Hall at the DeKoven Center, 2000 Wisconsin Avenue. The cost is $85 per person and a deadline to make reservations is June 3, though late registrations may be taken if space allows. To register, visit hsec.us/manrosslecture.
