Republican state legislatures across the country are increasingly bent on shutting out dissenting voices who dare speak out against their right-wing agenda.

In Tennessee, the GOP House expelled two Black legislators from Nashville and Memphis who joined a peaceful rally at the State Capitol following a deadly gun massacre. The two members only returned to the legislature after their county commissions voted to reinstate them.

In Montana, the GOP House physically barred Rep. Zooey Zephyr—an openly transgender member, who represents Missoula—from sitting in the legislative chamber for the rest of the session. Her crime? She had vigorously denounced Republican legislation banning transgender health services for minors.

And in the Texas state Senate, as Republicans pushed anti-drag bills to "protect children," Democratic state Sen. Roland Gutierrez (whose district includes Uvalde) replied that they could protect children by passing his gun safety bills. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick shot him down, and said that if he kept bringing up his gun safety bills they may refuse to let him speak.

It was already bad enough that Republicans were using their agenda to attack marginalized communities, suppress votes, regulate our bodies, give tax breaks to the rich, and allow gun massacres to go unabated. But now, Republicans in these states are even trying to silence elected officials who dissent against that agenda.
