MPAC responds last night's State of the Union Address

Last night, President Trump used his State of the Union address as a campaign speech to promote a vision of America that justifies his administration’s abusive policies, from inhumane immigration policies to walking back climate treaties, and the recent one-sided Israeli-Palestinian “peace” plan -- to name but a few. As we continue to work with our allies and partners for our collective vision of an inclusive America, we had several concerns with yesterday's speech.
Here is what we found most concerning:
* Trump credited the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with securing our nation’s borders. In reality, the border has become a danger zone.
* He repeatedly used misleading employment statistics to claim that the American economy is thriving. Not only do his claims crumble in the face of scrutiny, they obscure what really hurts our economy -- a broken and inefficient immigration system.
* His most concerning statements were on supporting religious freedom. The truth is that under this administration, religious freedom has gravely suffered. Look no further than the Muslim Ban, the rise in hate crimes, and the clamping down on free speech against the BDS movement.
