WHO SHOULD YOU VOTE FOR?

With a month to go to the primaries, this week we are focusing on the elections and how you can actively participate in electing legislators that care about California Health Rights.  From AVFCA’s three emails this week you will learn about registration, legislators and how to support campaigns.

As non-profit, A Voice for Choice Advocacy cannot endorse a candidate or tell you who to vote for, but we can tell you how to work out who in your districts will further California Health Rights and vaccine choice.  The fate of many of those running who are on our side will be determined in the March 3 primary.  Team up with people in your district and work out the viable candidates together (see below for instructions).  Christina and a few others are working on a Voter Guide outside of AVFCA, so if you identify candidates in your district for State Assembly or Senate who support Health Rights and Vaccine Choice, please enter them here: http://cafamiliesforhealthrights.org/identified-candidate-submission or send an email with their name and district to [email protected].  We need your input to make it successful.

How to work out who to support…

In California, every Assembly district is up for election and half the Senate districts are up for election – the odd numbered districts, even numbered are in 2022.

·       Find your Assembly district number and your Senate district number by typing your address into this link: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/.

·       Then find your Assembly and Senate (odd numbers only) district number in the Certified List of Candidates in this link: https://elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov/statewide-elections/2020-primary/cert-list-candidates.pdf (CA Senate starts on page 21)

·       Note down the list of candidates.  If an incumbent is running (has a * by their name), look up if they voted yes on SB276 by finding their name on this link:  http://legxxxxxx.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billVotesClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB276.  If they voted No or NVR, then they are on our side of Health Rights and vaccine choice.  If they voted Aye, then you want to look at the other candidates running.

·       Go to https://ballotpedia.org/ and type in “California State Senate District X” and “California Assembly District X” where “X” corresponds to the numbers of your districts, and look at the voting history in your district.  Look at whether your district has been primarily Democrat or Republican.  Districts usually have similar percentage of voters from each party vote.

·       Go to the each of the candidates that are running in your districts website or facebook page – you can find them by googling their name and “assembly” or “senate” depending on what they are running for.  Research them.  Find out who are they and what they stand for?

o   Most Republicans believe in parental rights and are on our side on vaccine choice, but there are some that are not.  While most Democrats believe that the government knows best and in the past many Democrats have been for vaccine mandates, more and more understand the issue.  So it is important to find out where all candidates running in your districts stand on Health Rights and vaccine mandates.

·       Go to each candidate’s public events. Candidates may not want to be on record for being against vaccine mandates because they are worried about being slandered as “anti-vaxxers” by their opponents.  So listen to what they have to say and either ask publically or one on one, in a professional manner, where they stand on vaccine mandates.  They may not be aware of the issue, in which case ask if you can have a longer meeting with them to discuss the issue.

·       Once you have done this for all candidates, if there is only one candidate that is against vaccine mandates, vote for them and do everything you can to support their campaign.
If there is more than one candidate running that is against vaccine mandates, work out who is the better one to support in the primary – this may not be the one who you ultimately support in the general election.  It is about manipulating the system to have the best two candidates in the general election.

o   From the voting history of your district you can see the % that voted for one party or another.  You can assume that the % voting for that party will be similar from the last election.  If there are two or more candidates running from one party in your district, then it is likely the vote that party got in the last election will be split somewhat between them.  If there is only one candidate running from a party, then it is likely that they will get the votes that party got in the last election.

o   It may make sense to support the one than you think will get fewer votes, to try to get them into the general election, so those two candidates run off against one another and it won’t matter which wins because it will be a win against vaccine mandates.

·       Once you have determined who you are going to vote for, find out what else you can do to support their campaign.  That may be walking for them, fundraising, calling, polling, getting ballots to polling stations, etc.

·       And of course, make sure you are registered to vote and do vote on March 3rd.

Remember , if you identify candidates in your district for State Assembly or Senate who support Health Rights and Vaccine Choice, please enter them here: http://cafamiliesforhealthrights.org/identified-candidate-submission or send them to [email protected].
