Rescued from a factory egg farm, Ashburn hen likely laid hundreds of eggs but never had the chance to raise a single child. She endured a heartless system that commodifies motherhood and ends with slaughter at around 12 months of age (when fertility levels drop).

Ashburn is someone, not something. And thankfully, the egg farmer realized this too when he was faced with “depopulating” — a euphemism for mass slaughter — in the midst of COVID-19. Instead of killing 634 hens, the farmer chose to find homes for them. We welcomed 14, including Ashburn, to our California sanctuary.

Here, Ashburn is no longer seen as a commodity but as a mother and a survivor.
