That's why Our Revolution is partnering with Bernie Sanders, Ro Khanna, the National Consumer Law Center, and our members across the country on a new campaign demanding the cancellation of existing medical debt, and to implement root-cause solutions that prevent more people from going into debt.

We're organizing patients to pressure Congress and the President to hold hospital chains, credit card companies, and others who perpetuate this sickness in our healthcare system accountable.

Our demands are simple and broadly popular: end price-gouging, guarantee the right to free care and financial assistance, and stop predatory collection practices that cause debt to spiral out of control.

Our theory of change is simple. Hospitals are federal contractors who receive hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars through the Medicare and Medicaid programs. That means President Biden and Congress can withhold federal funding from hospitals that hurt patients.

Working people can toil their whole lives to amass a bit of financial freedom, but one medical issue can destroy all that progress and ruin families financially.

Here are just a few stories of the unnecessary pain our neighbors have had to endure.

“In 2010, I was hit by a car on my bike. I barely survived, had a brain injury, my hand amputated and reattached — costing nearly $1 million. Even with insurance, I went bankrupt. I’ve already sold my home, my retirement account is gone, my parents took out a loan to help. Medical Debt has ruined my whole family.” - Kristin N., Washington

Sadly, her story is just one of many. The situation is so dark that states that didn't expand Medicaid now have a significantly shorter life expectancy than those that did because of the soaring medical debt. Greed is quite literally killing our fellow Americans.

"I wouldn't owe anything if hospitals didn't gouge patients," said Mary Willis of Texas, another Our Revolution member. "The cost of an MRI in the hospital was eight times the cost of an outpatient MRI and 80 times outsourced MRIs. I owe over $8,000."

These are just some of the millions of stories of medical debt, and all of this pain is avoidable.
