No one should have to live with hazardous radiation in our communities.
John,
In October, radioactive waste dating back to the Manhattan Project was found in classrooms, the playground and elsewhere at Jana Elementary School in Florissant, MO.
That's why last month, Cori introduced the Justice for Jana Elementary Act of 2023 to require the cleanup of Jana Elementary School.
This urgently-needed legislation would require the Army Corp of Engineers to:
- Direct the Army Corps to establish new remediation goals to clean up Jana Elementary;
- Test all Hazelwood School District schools for radioactive contamination;
- Direct the Department of Energy to review all testing performed at the school and determine if this testing was reliable and;
- Create a fund to permit localities with schools impacted by these atomic projects to request financial assistance for radioactive testing or the construction of new schools.
No one should have to live alongside harmful radiation. Cori and our movement has always pushed for environmental justice and remediation efforts and we don't plan on slowing down now. And that's why we're asking if you can sign our petition as a citizen co-sponsor for the Justice for Jana Elementary Act?

This toxic discovery at Jana Elementary came right after a report found contamination in the wooded area near the Coldwater Creek — a designated Superfund site, a designation the government gives to especially polluted locations. For decades, this contamination has been linked to an increased rate of some cancers.
Even before she arrived on Capitol Hill, Cori advocated for the cleanup of Coldwater Creek. Cori also introduced the Coldwater Creek Signage Act, which would require signs to be posted along the creek to warn residents of the dangerous radioactive exposure, and initiated a federal review with the Government Accountability Office for the cleanup of the creek.
Solutions and accountability are long overdue. Our schools and communities deserve protection from radioactive contamination and other types of environmental hazards — and Cori won't stop fighting until our communities are safe and thriving.
Will you stand with Cori and our movement's efforts today to help our communities by adding your name as a citizen co-sponsor for these essential bills?
