House Republicans are forging ahead with their war against TikTok and free speech with an all-out ban. They claim it’s a matter of data privacy and security, but it poses the same amount of risk as American tech companies like Meta and Google.
This isn’t about data and security, John. It’s about creating a racist “red scare” around China to spread fear and hatred. That’s why Rep. Summer Lee and I are teaming up to reveal what this TikTok ban is really about — censoring the voices of millions and fearmongering.
Banning TikTok doesn’t solve data and security issues — it only feeds into Republicans’ anti-China narrative while silencing millions of voices. Creators like small businesses use the app to grow their presence and support themselves through economic uncertainty. Educational content on TikTok is a critical way to share information and create community among millions of users.
Both Summer and I know that banning TikTok is NOT the solution for creators, businesses, and organizers. If we’re going to protect users’ data and privacy, we have to do it across all platforms.
