John, last weekend, I had the opportunity to appear on MSNBC's The Saturday/Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart. And Jonathan had this really great question -
|
"How has your personal experience shaped the way you view immigrants seeking asylum today?" |
Thinking of my mother, I only had one answer - |
John, my mother wouldn't have crossed 1,811 miles of desert, wouldn't have almost died in the Rio Grande if she had any other option.
My husband, Boris, wouldn't have crossed the border in his freshman year of high school, wouldn't have had to work constantly to help his parents make ends meet if he had any other option.
The refugees Gov. Abbott is sending by the busload to Chicago wouldn't be suffering, would not be hungry, or thirsty, or cold, if they had any other option.
John, a few weeks ago, as a Vice Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, we visited the very same border, and my position has never been more clear: |
We need comprehensive and humane immigration reform. |
