John,
Sunday is Mother’s Day. And one way you can celebrate and honor mothers is by donating to post bail for mothers, Black women, and gender non-conforming people who were jailed solely because they could not afford cash bail.
The cash bail system, also known as wealth-based pretrial detention, punishes people who have not been convicted of anything, forcing them to await trial in cages because they can’t afford to post bail.
Can you chip in to bail funds today for mothers and caregivers so that they can come home to their families and communities for Mother’s Day and beyond?
Michigan Liberation Education Fund, a project of Mothering Justice, runs campaigns to transform our criminal legal system and to create a more just world today. Your donation will go directly toward bail funds, posting bail for people who would otherwise spend Mother’s Day separated from their families.
Together, we are fighting for racial justice, for an end to poverty, and for communities to have what they need to thrive. The racial wealth gap keeps widening, and our anti-Black criminal legal system continues to criminalize communities like ours.
Please, chip in $5, $25 or more to help mothers, Black women, and gender non-conforming people post bail and come home this Mother’s Day.

John,
Each year, families are kept apart on Mother’s Day because of the United States’ immoral and unconstitutional practice of money bail. This system punishes people who have not been convicted of anything, forcing them to await trial in cages because they can’t afford to post bail.
Here in Michigan, Michigan Liberation has done incredible work on the ground to free mothers, Black women, and gender non-conforming people who were jailed solely because they could not afford to post bail, highlight the role of profiteers in the bail bonds industry, and expose the massive underlying social inequities leading to contact with the legal system.
Please donate today so Michigan Liberation Education Fund and the coalition can pay the bails, fines, and fees of mothers who are sitting in jail because they cannot afford bail. Your donation will help reunite families this Mother’s Day and beyond.
Due to a long history of systemic racism, there’s a huge racial wealth gap, and Black people are also much more likely to be targeted for arrests. Black folks are disproportionately impacted by unjust money bail.
What started as a bailout, which our campaign has helped fundraise for since 2019, has evolved into a quest for transformational change across the legal system in Michigan.
This is important, game-changing work. And it’s urgent.
When caregivers are locked in cages, entire families and communities suffer. Even a few days behind bars can result in irreparable physical, emotional, and financial harm: Parents may lose their jobs, housing, and even their children.
Please donate as generously as you can today to help mothers and caregivers post bail before Mother’s Day. Any amount you can spare right now will truly make a difference.
