Dear John,
Minutes ago, I landed in Washington D.C. with Save the Boundary Waters’ Campaign Manager Alex Falconer and National Campaign Chair Becky Rom. Maybe you saw the upsetting news: January’s historic 20-year mining ban is under attack and at risk of being reversed. We are here to prevent that from happening.
Last week, Rep. Stauber introduced a bill to overturn the Biden Administration’s science-based 20-year mining ban in the watershed of the Boundary Waters. This newly introduced legislation goes directly against the will of the people. Nearly 70% of Minnesotans support a permanent ban on sulfide-ore copper mining in the Boundary Waters headwaters.
What would this dangerous bill do? *
The
historic
20-year
mining
ban
in
the
watershed
of
the
Boundary
Waters
would
be
canceled,
opening
the
headwaters
of
the
Boundary
Waters
to
America's
most
toxic
industry.
*
Mining
leases
would
be
reinstated
to
international
mining
companies
that
don’t
have
the
interest
of
the
Wilderness
or
the
American
people
in
mind.
*
Environmental
reviews
of
mine
plans
would
be
shortcut,
and
the
ability
to
challenge
any
bad
decisions
in
court
would
be
taken
away,
setting
a
very
dangerous
precedent
for
all
of
our
nation’s
cherished
places
We are not going to back down. Significant progress has been made in the fight to permanently protect the Boundary Waters because of advocates like you. Together, we can push back. [[link removed]]
RUSH A GIFT [[link removed]]
On Thursday, Becky will be the only person testifying on behalf of protecting the Boundary Waters in a Congressional Hearing about Rep. Stauber’s bill to reverse the Biden Administrations protective 20-year mining ban in the U.S. House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources. Without the support of Wilderness defenders like you, we would not be able to bring the voice of the Boundary Waters to Washington D.C.
We cannot do this work alone. We need Wilderness defenders like you. Rush a gift today to help us fight back against this bad legislation. [[link removed]]
