John,
Google still collects and retains location data from individuals visiting abortion clinics, which could be weaponized by prosecutors.
We cannot let Google off the hook here. Add your name to this petition calling on Google to stop collecting data that could aid anti-abortion prosecutors.
After Roe v. Wade was overturned last summer, Google promised to protect sensitive health data by deleting the location history of users who visited abortion clinics. [1] However, Accountable Tech’s latest experiment shows that the location history for even a short trip to an abortion clinic — like someone dropping off a friend or family member — can still be collected and retained on Google devices. [2]
On top of that, Google by default is collecting and retaining location search queries for abortion clinics for 18 months. That means if you search for an abortion clinic on Google Maps, that information will be kept in your Google account for a year and a half, possibly putting your private health information at risk.
Given that Google complies with more than 75 percent of government requests for data, this sensitive location data could be subpoenaed and weaponized by anti-abortion state governments to prosecute those seeking or assisting with an abortion. [3]
Google made a promise to protect users in a post-Roe America and fell short. Too much is at risk, so we’re calling them out!
Cordially,
Erin Matson

P.S. Big Tech’s toxic business model of surveillance advertising continues to compromise our privacy and security. It’s unacceptable. Let them know now.
