Administration breaks its promises [link removed] GIVE NOW to Assist Our Critical Fight to Protect and Strengthen Earned Benefits! [link removed] Dear John,

During last night's State of the Union [link removed] address, President Trump did little to reassure older Americans that he will protect their financial and health security. Even though he proclaimed, "We will always protect your Medicare and your Social Security," his words ring hollow as his Administration has broken its promise on seniors' earned benefits. In fact, during a recent interview President Trump was open to the idea of overhauling Social Security and Medicare — possibly as soon as the end of this year! When President Trump was asked if he would consider tackling so-called "entitlements," he casually suggested that he would be willing to "take a look at that" and "that's actually the easiest of all things."
Worse still, President Trump's failure to be forthright about his plans for earned benefit programs empowers so-called "fiscal hawks" in Washington to slash Social Security and Medicare and privatize these programs. President Trump also used his address to claim that the prices of prescription drugs have recently gone down for the first time in "51 years." Reality check: drug costs remain at historically high levels and big drug companies remain free to raise prices at their leisure. Yet, President Trump challenged Congress: "I am calling for bipartisan legislation that achieves the goal of dramatically lowering prescription drug prices. Get a bill to my desk, and I will sign it into law without delay." As you know, there is a landmark piece of legislation, the "Lower Drug Costs Now Act" (H.R. 3), [link removed] which has already passed the House and is gathering dust on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's desk. If the President is truly committed to taking on Big Pharma and reining in the high cost of prescription drugs, he would demand Majority Leader McConnell put this critical bill to the floor for an immediate vote! Bottom line: Americans don't want lip service — they want action! No American should have to choose between paying for health care, food or their rent. Unfortunately, President Trump's policies continue to reflect his preference for boosting the interests of the wealthiest Americans and huge corporations at the expense of lower- and middle-income Americans. In fact, each budget proposal he's submitted to Congress has included devastating cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security! And so, we simply cannot count on the President to end the status quo in Washington that for too long has targeted earned benefits with massive budget cuts. That's why the National Committee is counting on our million+ members and supporters to stand up and speak out for protecting and strengthening America's social safety net programs. Sincerely, Max Richtman
