John, Today, for the sake of our democracy, we are urging Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to resign.
This is not a decision we reached lightly. But it is warranted because of Thomas’s long-standing pattern of secretly accepting gifts from billionaire megadonor Harlan Crow, and his failure to recuse from cases where he had potential conflicts of interest.
Thomas likely violated civil and criminal laws, as CREW laid out in two complaints. And, catastrophically for our democracy, Thomas’s pattern of unethical conduct has created the impression that access to and influence over Supreme Court justices is for sale.
Resignation is the only course of action that remains to undo the damage that Thomas’s scandals have done to the Supreme Court’s legitimacy.
Thomas intentionally neglected to disclose:
– Two decades worth of luxury trips provided by billionaire mega-donor Harlan Crow,
– A billionaire buying his and other family members’ properties for over $100,000 and allowing Thomas’s mother to continue living in one of those properties rent-free, and
– Roughly $100,000 in tuition payments by the same billionaire for Thomas’s grandnephew, whom he raised.
John, Clarence Thomas did not just make a couple of mistakes on his disclosure forms. This is a pattern of self-enrichment, secrecy, and disdain for the law. We’re calling for his immediate resignation.
Thomas also consistently failed to recuse from cases in which his spouse had a potential financial or personal interest. He was the only dissent from the Court’s decision to reject President Trump's attempt to block the release to Congress of January 6 White House documents – documents that could have included communications to and from his wife.
If Clarence Thomas doesn't resign, the Court will never be able to regain credibility with the public. We must act now.
