** If you block mining here you are mandating mining in China. Simple as.

IWF ([link removed]) (5/8/23) column: "A new report reveals that achieving the pipe dream of reaching 'net-zero' carbon emissions will require far more critical minerals than the U.S. currently has. Unless the U.S. simplifies the permitting process for domestic mining, these resources will continue to be produced overseas and become more expensive as demand grows for renewables propped up by subsidies. The Institute for Energy Research estimates that increased demand for materials-intensive renewable energy technologies—such as solar panels, wind farms, battery storage, and electric vehicles—will require a 42-fold increase in lithium, a 25-fold increase in graphite, and a 21-fold increase in cobalt, as well as other rare earth elements. A shortage of copper is likely to derail net-zero ambitions unless production keeps up with doubling demand between now and 2035. Most critical minerals, including lithium and
cadmium, are currently produced in countries hostile to U.S. national security interests. In 2022, of 50 minerals designated vital to national security by the U.S. Geological Survey, more than half of U.S. mineral consumption was imported and the U.S. was completely reliant on imports for 15 minerals. China dominates most mineral supply chains from mining through processing: it refines almost 90% of rare earth elements and produces more than 80% of the world’s cobalt through ownership of major cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Beyond concerns about lax environmental standards in foreign countries, there’s evidence that some minerals, like cobalt, are being mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by children as young as six. ]"

** "While there are many states and municipalities still pushing to ban natural gas, it is vital for Americans to have access to affordable, abundant energy."

(5/8/23) column: "You may have already heard about Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm’s plan to develop and deploy a fully electric American military fleet by the 2030s. And since this is being done to appease the anger of the Climate God, all of the power for these tens of thousands of vehicles will all need to be generated through green energy sources such as wind and solar. We are being assured that this will put us on a solid footing somehow. Well, the good folks at the Institute for Energy Research (who know a few things about electricity generation and related matters) have taken a look at Granholm’s proposal and absolutely panned it for a variety of reasons. We’ll get to the related costs in a moment, but the key factor is reliability. Even if you have never been in combat, served in the military, or even seen a war movie, take a moment to read this and tell me if you don’t find yourself nodding your head in agreement...IER describes Granholm’s plan as 'perverse and dangerous.' And
that’s because it is. Imagine rolling along in a tank or an armored personnel carrier through some rough countryside, frequently in a place where there aren’t even any roads. And you’re maneuvering to gain an advantage over some enemy forces that are fully intent on killing you if they can. What happens when the battery in your electric combat vehicle goes dead? There won’t be any Tesla recharging stations handy so you’re going to have to have some sort of recharging vehicle in the convoy. But where will that vehicle recharge? And even if it works, anyone who has been within shouting distance of an EV can tell you that they take a good while to charge, far longer than refilling a fuel tank. Good luck with that."

Electrifying the civilian air fleet will help...

The Biden administration is actually doing the right thing here—it’s only a start, but it’s a step in the right direction. Good to know they received their copy of The Economic and Strategic Importance of Domestic Mineral Production. ** Get your's here. ([link removed])

(5/8/23) reports: "The Biden administration is moving to expedite the review and approval of a manganese and zinc mine in southern Arizona, setting up a standoff with a local environmental group concerned about the fate of vulnerable and endangered species in the Patagonia Mountains. The U.S. Forest Service and other federal agencies will shepherd South32 Hermosa’s $1.7 billion underground mine and processing plant through a prioritized regulatory process laid out under legislation, dubbed FAST-41, that was signed into law in 2015 under the Obama administration. 'The Permitting Council is pleased to see the first-ever critical minerals mining project accepted for coverage under our unique program,' Christine Harada, the council’s executive director, said in a statement. 'President Biden has committed to securing a domestic supply of responsibly sourced critical minerals, and manganese is a key part of the electric vehicle and stationary storage battery supply chain.' Harada said the project
is 'well-suited to receive the coordination, collaboration and transparency that infrastructure projects receive under the FAST-41 program, while ensuring a thorough environmental review and upholding strong environmental, labor, tribal consultation, and community engagement standards.'"
