John, I know firsthand how it feels to be told you are “unelectable.”

Because of my Muslim identity, as I have stepped into a career of public service, I’ve faced hateful, Islamophobic attacks – often at the hands of GOP fearmongers.

But I haven’t let this stop me from continuing to organize and speak up for those of us who have struggled to make our voices heard. I was the first Muslim woman elected to any office in North Carolina as Durham County Commissioner – becoming a representative for the underrepresented. Now, I’m running to do it again.

John, I’m not letting the barriers that are stacked so high against me disrupt the work we’ve achieved so far.

Every threat, every Islamophobic comment, and every question raised about whether I “belong” has made me even more committed to fighting for underrepresented, marginalized communities.

But the only path through those attacks is to build the grassroots support that helped me get elected in 2020. I know together, we can achieve a truly representative community, but we need all hands on deck to fuel this movement.
