The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Statement on Virginia Special Session

"We will not forget this injustice. It is time to remove these spineless politicians from office and install elected officials who will work to protect the lives and families of their constituents. Enough is enough. It is time for a gun violence prevention majority in Virginia."

Experts: It is Time to Fund Gun Violence Prevention Research

The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence and researchers from across the country call for the Senate to fund gun violence prevention research (July 25, 2019): “With proper funding, public health research can help us address gun violence, just as it has with other leading causes of death. It is time for Leader McConnell to take action and fund gun violence prevention research to help solve this uniquely American epidemic.”

Governor Ralph Northam Announces Funding for Community Violence Intervention Programs

Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence Director of African-American and Community Outreach Kayla Hicks issued the following statement: “Communities of color — especially young black men — are disproportionately affected by gun violence. But in these communities, gun violence and its root causes often go unaddressed. Today, Governor Northam and Secretary Moran took steps to change that by announcing grant funding for community violence intervention programs. This funding will allow localities to address both gun violence itself and the upstream factors that contribute to such violence. We are grateful to Governor Northam and Secretary Moran for taking this problem seriously and providing the resources to address gun violence in all Virginia’s communities.”

To protect victims of domestic violence, take guns from abusers, Orlando Sentinel

Policy Analyst Lisa Geller wrote an op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel in response to an incident in Florida in which a woman was arrested and served more jail time than her abuser for trying to remove his guns from his home. Lisa wrote, "We fail victims and survivors of domestic violence the moment we choose to protect abusers — and their firearms — over the people being abused … Ensuring that domestic abusers are prohibited from purchasing and possessing firearms and ensuring that firearms are actually removed from abusers is critical to saving lives." She urged Florida to both strengthen its domestic violence firearm removal policies and to enforce existing laws.

Advocates Believe Special Session on Gun Violence can be Successful, WVTV Virginia’s Public Radio

Sixteen states and the District of Columbia have authorized Extreme Risk Protection Orders, and, at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Executive Director Josh Horwitz says they work. “The bill would allow law enforcement to go to a court and remove firearms from someone who is in crisis. Getting the firearm out of their hands even temporarily for a few days can really save lives," Horwitz argues...He’s confident that public opinion will carry more weight than the National Rifle Association, and whatever happens in the special session he predicts a political reckoning for legislative candidates come November.

New Zealand Starts Gun Buyback Program In Response To Christchurch Mosque Shootings, NPR

Andrew Patrick, Media Director of The Coalition To Stop Gun Violence, said the nationwide gun buyback plan demonstrates the type of "action and accountability in response to a horrific mass shooting that is unfortunately missing in the United States of America. When it comes to moral and legislative responses to gun violence, American politicians could learn a lot by looking toward this small island in the South Pacific."

         PETITIONS

On July 26, CSGV launched a petition calling for the expulsion of three white University of Mississippi students who posed with a shotgun and an AR-15 in front of the sign commemorating the murder of 14-year-old civil rights icon Emmett Till. Guns are more often used to intimidate than to kill. This image is armed, violent intimidation. It is a message of white supremacy and racism dressed in casual attire.Their actions must not be ignored or normalized.
