Steven Decker Sentenced for Defrauding U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and MI Treasury





*LANSING* – Last week, Steven Decker, 34, of Wyandotte, was sentenced to two years’ probation and ordered to pay $28,506 restitution after pleading no contest to two counts of Receiving Stolen Property valued at $1,000-$20,000, in the Wayne Circuit Court, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced. The Attorney General's enforcement operation was conducted in close collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General. 

Decker was charged in connection with the theft of monies from the Michigan Department of Treasury Unclaimed Property Division and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The $28,506 restitution order represents the portion of stolen funds, amounting in excess of $400,000, Decker received from a co-defendant and spent, with the knowledge the funds were stolen. 

“My office will continue to vigorously prosecute those who defraud our public agencies. Michigan’s taxpayers and service-members deserve no less,” said Nessel when the sentencing date was announced.   

One of Decker’s co-defendants is awaiting trial in the Wayne County Circuit Court relating to the funds embezzled from Michigan’s Unclaimed Property and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. In June of 2022, Decker’s other co-defendant, Melissa Flores, was sentenced to two years in prison [ [link removed] ] and was ordered to pay $110,000 restitution for her role in the scam.
