Dear NRDC Action Fund Activist,

Speaker Kevin McCarthy's bad faith debt ceiling gambit shows he is willing to paralyze the nation, default on our debts, undermine our climate change fight, and threaten the clean energy boom that is creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs nationwide.

This is an underhanded attempt to subvert the working of our government in order to secure unpopular short-sighted, fossil-fuel-first policies that threaten our one and only chance to secure a planet that's safe for all life.

The House GOP has narrowly passed their debt ceiling bill and now it's gone to the Senate. We must condemn this dangerous game of chicken, one which threatens us with financial ruin, before it goes too far.

Enough is enough — Tell Congress and President Biden to reject Speaker McCarthy and the GOP's extreme, bad faith debt ceiling negotiations that undermine the will of the American people.

Fossil fuel giveaways. Slashing environmental protections and common sense safety regulations. Disproportionate, draconian cuts to non-defense spending. Attacking job-creating, clean energy incentives from the landmark Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), halting progress that could help cut climate pollution in half by 2030.

This is the horrifying plan that Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the House Republican majority is trying to take our nation hostage to pass. Here are just a few of the short-sighted, dangerous provisions in this bill:

• imposing across the board, draconian cuts to nondefense spending that would directly affect our ability to prepare for deadly wildfires and jeopardize efforts to upgrade failing infrastructure, among other things
• completely rolling back the resoundingly successful climate and clean energy incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, which have already resulted in $75 billion in new corporate investments in clean energy
• threatening the promise of 60,000 direct clean energy-related jobs in red states and blue, as well as other community investments in clean energy and infrastructure
• promoting more mining and drilling while gutting safety and environmental protections, cutting vulnerable communities out of environmental review processes, and forcing more destructive fossil fuel dependence

The GOP is threatening us with the risk of financial ruin if we fail to address the debt limit, but their bill also threatens us with climate ruin. We cannot let this bad faith, extreme negotiating tactic succeed.
