John,
The U.S. is dangerously close to defaulting on our debt, and House Republicans are exploiting this crisis in an effort to make extreme, steep spending cuts.
Last month, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy led House Republicans in passing legislation that would cut trillions of dollars from crucial safety net programs including Medicaid, Social Security, Head Start, Housing Choice Vouchers, SNAP, and more.
Now, 43 Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, have vowed to oppose increasing the debt ceiling without spending cuts.
We know the U.S. Senate must raise the debt ceiling without conditions. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said the US could default on its debt as soon as June 1 if Congress doesn’t act — a situation that would spell "economic calamity."1
The cruelty is the point, and this deal cannot be entertained. We must pass a clean funding bill to extend the debt limit and avert a fiscal crisis, one without cuts to vital programs and benefits.
Sign and send the petition to the U.S. Senate: Pass clean debt ceiling legislation.
