Dear John,
For over 25 years, the “five-year bar” has denied lawfully present immigrants access to critical health and social services. Now, you have the chance to join PIF in calling on Congress for a swift end to the 5-year bar.
Very soon, the Lifting Immigrant Families Through Benefits Access Restoration (LIFT the BAR Act) will be reintroduced in the 118th Congress. This landmark legislation, led by Representative Jayapal and Senator Hirono, restores access to programs like Medicaid, CHIP, and SNAP by removing the five-year bar [[link removed]] and other barriers that deny critical care and aid to people who are lawfully present. Congratulations to everyone who helped get us to this point!
PIF is circulating a sign-on letter [[link removed]] bringing national, state, and local organizations together in support of the bill . The letter will be sent to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to encourage swift action to pass the LIFT the BAR Act.
Our goal is to gather a diverse group of signatories from all 50 states plus DC and across all sectors–immigrant rights groups; food and nutrition groups; health care groups; housing groups; civil rights groups; and more! If your organization signed onto our 2022 LIFT the BAR Act letter [[link removed]] , you can sign on with assurance that the legislation is unchanged. Please share this letter broadly, urging organizations in your networks to join you in signing on.
The full text of the sign on letter is available here [[link removed]] . Click the button at the right to sign your organization on to the letter. Sign Your Organization On [[link removed]]
Don’t forget — PIF’s Lift the Bar Act Reintroduction Tool Kit [[link removed]] has links to background information on the bill, practical tools and templates for setting up educational meetings, and materials to help your efforts. The PIF 5-year bar resources page [[link removed]] includes more materials and more research to support your work!
Thank you for your leadership in the fight to protect immigrant families.
In solidarity,
Adriana, Cheasty, and the whole PIF team
