A Chorus of Reasons Why We Teach

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! To honor educators, we offer this preview article—by the dedicated teachers and staff of Wilkins Elementary School in Jackson, Mississippi—from the upcoming Spring issue of Learning for Justice magazine.

These educators answer a difficult question—“Under these conditions, why would teachers teach?”—in surprising and moving ways, such as second grade teacher Linda Porter’s response: “It is my belief that every student is capable of tasting the same passion that I feel for teaching by becoming collaborators in the exploration of learning.”

In challenging times like these, it is more important than ever to let educators know they are valued and supported. This week’s newsletter highlights LFJ resources intended to celebrate and uplift the efforts educators engage in to make our world a better place.

The End-of-Year Mental
Health Check

The end of an academic year can yield a roller coaster of emotions—especially for students who benefit from the safe, structured space of the classroom and who might need extra support to thrive over the summer. This LFJ article features guidance from mental health professionals about how to help students in need as the school year winds down.
