Tina Smith

Friend,

Today, I voted to remove the President of the United States from office. My good friend and colleague, Alabama Senator Doug Jones, did too.

Doug and I have a special bond: we were the only two Senators sworn in together in early 2018. I relied on Doug's experience as a lawyer, his advice, and his counsel throughout this process as we all worked through the legal and ethical issues of this case. Throughout the trial, we both took our oaths to carry out impartial justice seriously.

This was a difficult decision for many of us, but given that Doug represents a state that Trump won by nearly 30 points, his vote took an exceptional amount of courage.

This trial was not just about whether President Trump extorted our allies for personal political gains and then attempted to cover it up — though it's clear that he did. It was also about whether the American people can hold their leaders accountable and defend our right to free and fair elections. It was about the type of country we want to be, and whether or not we have the courage to fight for it.

Doug, myself, and my other Democratic colleagues proved that we do. I know you do, too. That's why I'm turning to you for help today:

Please, consider splitting a contribution of any amount you can afford between our campaigns today. Help Doug and I bring accountability back to our government and uphold the rule of law as you elected us to do.

When the President solicits foreign nations to influence our elections with disinformation and prevents the public from hearing a full and fair account of that effort, we cannot afford to turn a blind eye.

Our duty to defend the Constitution of the United States requires action.

The truth is, I see more signs of common ground, hope, and determination in all of us than I do the fractures of division, distrust, and partisanship. This process may have let us down. But we must continue to hold onto the values inside each and every one of us that drives us to find common good within our communities, to organize on the issues that matter most, and to hold our elected leaders accountable. That matters.

Thank you for everything you have done, and will do.

Yours,

— Tina
