Tomorrow, President Biden will meet with congressional leaders about the debt ceiling.
Yesterday on NBC's Meet the Press, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stood strong for a clean debt ceiling increase, saying "As the President has made clear, default is not negotiable." Pressed on whether he'd accept a short term increase, Jeffries told NBC's Chuck Todd, "I don’t think the responsible thing to do is to kick the can down the road."
But the New York Times reports that "some Democrats are breaking ranks to pressure the president to the table."
We are talking daily about this issue with the White House, our allies in Congress, other progressive organizations, and the media and keep them informed of the growing public mobilization for a clean debt ceiling with no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or other programs millions of families depend on.
As a reminder of the stakes, McCarthy’s "Default on America Act" debt ceiling bill would make huge cuts to funding for critical programs Americans depend on, including:
- 350,000 families losing housing vouchers and 87,000 families losing affordable housing under HUD’s Project-Based Rental Assistance program, prompting mass evictions.
- Nearly 250,000 families losing Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits. The bill would also take assistance away from people and families receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and Medicaid.
- At least 170,000 children from low-income families being kicked off Head Start programs, and another 105,000 children losing child care, affecting children's future academic prospects and making it harder for their parents to work or attend school.
- Blocking President Biden’s student debt relief program, which provides $20,000 of relief to qualified borrowers if they received a Pell Grant and $10,000 if they did not.
- Make it easier for polluters to poison communities.
- Strip billions of dollars in funding for clean energy projects
- Give another huge windfall to billionaires and big corporations.
So far, Democrats are still mostly saying the right things, but as pressure builds, some may be tempted to cave. President Obama made that mistake and the result slashed important programs and prolonged the Great Recession. We can’t let that happen again.
