As we celebrate the allies’ victory over fascism in Europe so many decades ago, our nation is faced with an out-of-control minority that has much in common with the forces we defeated, and that now insists on imposing its unpopular, anti-democratic agenda on the rest of us.
Bereft of ideas and completely uninterested in solving the nation’s problems, this MAGA minority knows that in a real democracy its days are numbered. That’s why, in state after state, it is seeking to undermine elections and ignore the voters. If America refuses to agree with MAGA, MAGA will seek to cancel America.
Beyond this, it is staggering to realize MAGA’s connection to autocratic movements that seek to end democracy in countries across the globe. Not content to reshape our nation in its image, MAGA makes its global intentions clear, lining up against Ukraine in their valiant effort to repel Russia and, even more frightening, seeking to weaken or even eliminate NATO (The Alliance was formed in 1945, ironically, to defend Europe against autocratic threats).
Under MAGA rule, visits by our leaders to bolster Ukraine and the Alliance would stop. So would material support for Ukraine’s war effort. Moreover, rather than ally with democracies, the United States of America would find itself standing with the world’s most repressive and dangerous regimes.
The question we must ask ourselves is, how can we stand for this? How can we fail to honor the sacrifice of those who have given everything to defend our freedom? More urgently, what can each of us do to save our democracy from the cancer within?
The answer is, step up. Get into the fight. All of us, no matter what our beliefs. Because the American values we hold in common far outstrip our differences.
