May is Military Appreciation Month, and as a former Navy veteran, I never forget what this month is all about.

I’m proud to be a former Navy helicopter pilot. (Check out the photo of me in action above!) Inspired by my grandfather’s service during World War II, I knew I wanted to join the Navy since the 5th grade. I entered the Naval Academy at 18 years old and flew helicopters for the Navy for nearly 10 years.
I understand firsthand the sacrifices our service members make for our country, and as one of only a few women veterans in the House, I feel a special responsibility to always reassess whether we are meeting the promises we have made to them.
One of my top priorities in Congress is addressing the big challenges vets are facing, like homelessness, a lack of education and job opportunities, and difficulty accessing health care -- including mental health treatment.
I was proud to help get the PACT Act signed into law to ensure veterans exposed to toxic burn pits don’t have to jump through hoops to get the health care they need and have earned. On the House Armed Services Committee, I’ve also worked to expand education opportunities for veterans and their families and improve access to mental health care, including therapy programs with service dogs.
We must show up for our veterans the way they have shown up for us, and I’m so proud to be a voice for them in the House.
