Friends - there have been many questions on my mind since Saturday's tragic shooting in Texas, and one of them is this:
How many more Americans need to lose their lives for Congress to act?
On Saturday, 8 people were killed at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, nearly a year after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. This marks the 199th mass shooting since the start of this year.
It's more clear than ever that we need to take action, which is why I am asking supporters like you to make your voice heard on this issue.
Gun violence is an issue that is personal to me. I've had multiple friends die as a result of gun violence. A friend of mine was shot and killed in Milwaukee, robbed for a pair of shoes.
Whether at a mall in Allen, Texas, a medical office in Atlanta, Georgia, or a birthday party in Alabama City — no person in our country is safe with the mass availability of assault weapons.
This is a terrifying reality to live in. A reality where every American is unsafe from the dangers of a mass shooting no matter where they go. A reality where lawmakers continue to prioritize money from the NRA and the gun lobby over protecting their constituents from gun violence. A reality where elected officials will do everything they can to protect the life of a fetus, but not children in schools.
Enough is enough. Please join us in calling on Congress to pass an assault weapons ban.
We are powerful togetherand there is much more we can do to combat this crisis.
While conservative lawmakers send their thoughts and prayers after every mass shooting rather than support policies that will save lives, we are going to elect candidates that can flip seats and will fight for legislation to protect the lives of Americans.
So we must continue to organize and unseat every single one of those NRA-controlled lawmakers, no matter how long it takes.
I hope you will continue to stand with me in our fight to elect candidates that will stand up to the gun lobby and protect Americans from the dangers of gun violence.
Thank you for listening,
Mandela
