Congress needs to pass an assault weapons ban now. It's time to act.

Dear MoveOn member,

A shooter with an assault weapon killed eight people, including children, and injured at least seven more at a shopping mall in Allen, Texas.

This time it was a shopping mall. Just weeks ago, it was after neighbors asked an armed man to stop firing his assault weapon in his yard in Cleveland, Texas. Last month, it was an assault weapon at a school in Nashville, Tennessee. Earlier in the month, it was at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky. Less than a year ago, it was a school in Uvalde, Texas, the images of which remain seared in our collective memory.

Where will it be next? A church? A movie theater? A supermarket? A parade? A concert?

We don't know where the next mass shooting will take place, but sadly, we can be sure it will take place. Likely within days. And with a military-grade assault weapon that has no justification for civilian use.

In addition to thoughts and prayers, our political leaders can offer laws and votes—such as immediate support for a federal assault weapons ban which would save lives. Tell your members of Congress to stand up for constituents, for our safety, and against the gun lobby and bring back the federal assault weapons ban.

Congress must reinstate the assault weapons ban immediately. It worked in the past and can work again. We need commonsense, impactful action to tackle gun violence. Most Americans agree: Civilians do not need military-grade weaponry.

The majority of Americans—including many Republican voters—want commonsense gun safety measures, including the assault weapons ban.1 Such a federal ban used to be the law of the land, and it worked. When Republicans allowed it to expire, mass shootings skyrocketed.2

But Republican elected officials, who are in a ghoulish embrace with the NRA and others in the gun lobby, want to talk about anything other than guns when it comes to gun violence. That's why Republican leaders need to hear loud and clear: Voters expect you to take real action and will respect you for passing an assault weapons ban and other commonsense measures.

Please add your name to join the nearly 260,000 fellow MoveOn members demanding that Congress act on an assault weapons ban.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Voters just defied history and stopped a MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms, our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but only if we work together.
