CCL conservatives go to Hill
to talk climate solutions with Republican lawmakers

More than 90 conservatives with Citizens’ Climate Lobby went to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to talk to Republican members of Congress about climate solutions, specifically market-based approaches like the Energy Innovation Act.

Daniel Palken, a CCL Conservative Outreach Fellow, said, “We're in this room not to berate the politician but to try to work together to try to push nonetheless for more aggressive climate solutions.”

Here’s a sampling of what showed up on social media about the lobbying effort, which we invite you to share:

  • CCL tweeted about the Monday preparation for Tuesday’s meetings.

  • E&E News tweeted a short video of CCL conservatives lobbying on the Hill.

  • Arkansas Republican Congressman French Hill tweeted about his meeting with CCL constituents.

  • Virginia Republican Congressman Denver Riggleman also tweeted about meeting with CCL constituents.

  • CCL posted on Instagram a behind-the-scenes photo of a VICE News interview with Jacob Abel.

  • Coincidentally, Washington state Congressman Derek Kilmer tweeted this video with CCL volunteer Mike Kelly, who was a guest of Kilmer at the State of the Union.

Other news this week:

State-level carbon pricing success: Massachusetts took a step closer to enacting a state-wide carbon price last week when the state Senate passed legislation with strong bipartisan support. Read more in this Community Bulletin post.

CCL answers questions on Reddit: Danny Richter, VP of Government Affairs, and Jerry Hinkle, Research Coordinator, recently held an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit about the policy and politics of climate change. Check out the conversation here.

Media: Editorial endorsement in Florida

The headline pretty much says it all: “Bill to curb climate crisis would impose fee on greenhouse gases. Citizens get monthly check. What’s not to like?” That was from an editorial endorsement that ran in the Sun Newspapers, including the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. It came about because of a meeting that CCL volunteers had with the Sun Newspapers’ editorial board in Port Charlotte. Volunteer Lindsey Kohlenburg reports the meeting went for more than an hour, during which they answered numerous questions about the dividend and prospects for the legislation in Congress. Judging by the editorial, they had the right answers.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. To talk with other CCLers about their media work and get advice or ideas for your own, head to the “Working with Media” forum on CCL Community.
