John,
Before tomorrow’s meeting at the White House, some House GOP members are getting cold feet about the possibility of a federal default.
Instead of defending Speaker McCarthy’s bill ahead of the White House meeting of congressional leadership, one House Republican called it “a fairy tale” and “not real.”1
If the debt ceiling isn’t lifted by around June 1st, the U.S. will face a catastrophic default on our debts and it also means that Social Security payments won’t be made, millions of Americans on food assistance would see their benefits suspended, and U.S. military and civilian federal employees wouldn’t get paid. If we default, economists have said the result will be an instant recession.
Already, CHN and our allies have sent more than 24,000 letters to senators demanding they reject any debt ceiling deal that would result in drastic cuts to programs that serve seniors, vulnerable communities, and the disabled.
Before tomorrow’s White House meeting, send a message to your senators and urge them to tell leadership to pass a clean debt ceiling increase without cuts to programs and services.
TAKE ACTION
Time is running out to raise the debt ceiling and avoid calamity -- and it can be done without gutting funding to essential health, nutrition, and housing programs. The House bill passed by the slimmest of margins. It’s time to put pressure on the Senate and demand they not cave in to Speaker McCarthy and the extremist faction of his party.
Hurry! Send a direct message to your senators urging them to raise the debt ceiling without Speaker McCarthy’s cruel cuts before tomorrow’s meeting with President Biden.
Defaulting on our debts is not an option. Congress must put country before partisanship and raise the debt ceiling without budget cuts in order to avoid an economic collapse.
Thank you for all you do to protect vulnerable communities,
