Insurer Market Power & Hospital Prices
In this month's issue of Health Affairs, Anthony LoSasso and colleagues
examine the association between health insurer market share and
negotiated prices paid to hospitals
<[link removed]>.
The authors use new data from the 2021 Hospital Price Transparency
initiative to determine that the market-leading insurer in the least
competitive (most concentrated) insurance markets pays 15 percent less
to hospitals than the market-leading insurer in the most competitive
(least concentrated) markets.
LoSasso and colleagues discuss the possibility that price transparency
itself could change negotiations between insurers and hospitals.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Today in Forefront, Robert Phillips and Rebecca Etz discuss how proposed
quality measures
<[link removed]>
from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) fall largely
on primary care to collect and improve, and do not align with the
high-value functions of primary care.
Nathaniel Tran and coauthors argue that Tennessee's rejection of federal
HIV prevention funds
<[link removed]>
threatens community prevention efforts, and could cost more than $270
million in US taxpayer dollars to cover lifelong HIV treatment for
preventable infections.
