Dear John,
Over the weekend, a driver of an SUV slammed into [[link removed]] a group of people waiting at a bus stop outside of the Ozanam Center, a Catholic Charities Shelter that serves migrants in Brownsville, Texas near the Rio Grande Valley border. Eight people were gruesomely killed and at least 11 others were injured, some in critical condition.
The American Immigration Council mourns this tragic loss of life and sends our condolences to each of the families and loved ones of these victims. If you would like to donate funds or food items to the Ozanam Center, please visit their website [[link removed]] .
It goes without saying, that our country is dealing with a heightened sense of divisiveness and anti-immigrant rhetoric that continues to create tension in communities, especially along the border. This week, as several pandemic-era policies come to an end—including the inhumane Title 42 policy that has reshaped border processing and created a patchwork of arbitrary and inconsistent outcomes for migrants—we encourage all to come together in the American values that make our country strong: equality, opportunity, safety, and family.
Our hearts are also with the victims of several acts of gun violence that occurred this past week.
