ACLU Supporter –
The fight for our rights remains pressing at every level in this country. The work before us may seem incredibly daunting but we're emailing today to make sure you know that the ACLU and our nationwide affiliate network will never stop fighting for and alongside you.
We have what it takes to show up, push back, and defend all our rights. But one big piece of that is the strength of our informed and activated ACLU community – and that's why we're making sure you're as up-to-speed as possible right now. Here's what you need to know on the latest in our fight back:
For our trans communities:
- We're suing Oklahoma to challenge the state's ban on all forms of gender-affirming health care for trans youth. In Montana, the ACLU of Montana sued against the censure of state representative Zooey Zephyr for voicing her objection to SB 99, a ban on the rights of trans youth to access gender-affirming health care. The ACLU, ACLU of Montana, and Lambda Legal have also promised to challenge the harmful SB 99 ban in court. And in Missouri, the ACLU of Missouri secured a win for trans Missourians when a judge extended her recent temporary restraining order against the Missouri Attorney General's extreme and unprecedented restrictions on gender-affirming care for trans people of all ages.
- This is all part of the unprecedented surge of anti-trans attacks. But trans people belong everywhere – and we will never stop fighting to protect the rights of us all.
For our abortion rights:
- Both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly passed Senate Bill 20, a ban on abortion after only 12 weeks of pregnancy. Make no mistake, this ban was passed quickly and behind closed doors by anti-abortion extremists who know it was unpopular and wrong. But the fight is far from over: The bill will now go to Governor Roy Cooper, who has vowed to veto the legislation.
- No matter what, we won't stop showing up alongside advocates in North Carolina and across the country to fight back against all extreme bans like this. Politicians shouldn't be playing doctor. Period.
For our right to privacy and protected online speech:
- Congress is attempting to pass three bills that would chill free speech, decimate our right to digital privacy, and destroy the internet as we know it. The EARN IT, Cooper Davis, and STOP CSAM Acts are all allegedly intended to protect children from online sexual abuse and stop online fentanyl sales – but that's not what these bills actually do. In reality, these dangerous bills would dismantle end-to-end encryption and increase efforts to monitor and surveil us. End-to-end encryption is our strongest defense against abusive governments, hackers, and organized crime. And these bills essentially force platforms to stop offering end-to-end encryption.
- Our policy advocates are speaking out fervently against these bills on Capitol Hill, urging our representatives to vote against all three without delay.
ACLU Supporter, these are only the latest updates in the fight. But make no mistake, we're positioned across the full landscape of civil liberties to show up, push back, and win for ALL our rights.
Thank you for being a key part of our ongoing efforts – we'll continue to keep you informed on our work as it unfolds and how you can take action in the fight. And please remember, we are here and we are not giving up.
Together, we'll continue to show up. And together, we'll win.
– The ACLU Team
