The Wall Street Journal recently ran a report showing that eighth graders' [[link removed]]
test scores in U.S. history and civics fell to the lowest levels on record last year.
So the kids are getting dumber. This is no shock considering this is the first release
of U.S. history and civics scores since the start of the pandemic. The National Assessment
of Educational Progress, known as The Nation's Report Card, showed a decline in student knowledge
that reversed all gains made since the 1990s. According to the data, 13% of eighth graders
met proficiency standards for U.S. history.
Additionally, low performing eighth grade students had significant drops in civics and in
U.S. history, while high performing students mainly held steady. This is, of course, unsurprising:
Educational systems tend not to affect the highest performers because the highest performers are
still smart. The kids who have trouble, however, get left behind.

Peggy Carter, National Center for Educational Statistics Commissioner, said that she was shocked
by all of this. The average score in 2022 for eighth grade students in U.S. history was a
terrifying 258 out of 500. So basically, everyone is failing.
Again, not a shock. The federal government has focused on two things and two things only over
the past several years: closing the schools and woking the kids. And now the results are in. This
is why everybody who was involved in shutting down the schools is desperately running from their
own positions. For example, Anthony Fauci yesterday had the temerity to suggest we have to stop
playing the blame game about shutting down the schools.

We can all see why he would want to escape the blame game. Some of us were saying that schools never really
should have shut down. The stats were very clear: Kids were not getting sick. I had to move my kids all
the way to Florida in order to find an open school. Meanwhile, the CDC was openly changing its standards
on how to reopen schools based on the advice of nonscientists.
And then there's the Fed's second priority: woking the kids. The prevailing attitude is that kids do not
need to know anything about American civics or history. What they really need to know is critical race theory
and gender identity. That is why if you listen to the Left about education these days, their chief priority
is fighting school choice and making sure that states do not pass laws barring critical race theory and
teaching sexual orientation in schools. This is the thing they care most about. It is why Kamala Harris,
the world's worst vice president, is suggesting the great risk to kids right now is the banning of books -
conveniently ignoring that “banning books” is her term for preventing small children from accessing gender-bending pornography.
The biggest problem in our schools is not “book banning.” It is that the kids cannot read because the Left does
not care about whether the kids read. These are factories for ignorance promoted by the federal government
at the expense of billions of dollars.

Left to their own devices, Democratic bureaucrats would ensure that kids get drag queen story hour but not
basic life skills. Educational performance is down because Democrats, by and large, do not care about
educational quality as much as they care about payoffs from the teachers unions and using the system to
indoctrinate the young.
These are all crocodile tears. We can all see them lie in real time, and we will not let them get away with it.
