Dear John,
Just two years ago this week, I announced to all of you that I was running for Congress. After nearly three decades of working as a public interest lawyer, I saw the issues I had been working on -- the progress we'd made -- upended by this administration. From voting rights and affordable healthcare to the crisis at our border and inaction on common-sense gun safety measures, this administration was actively undermining settled law and challenging the values that we hold dear as Americans.
I needed to take the fight to the next level.
I am so proud of the work that my colleagues and I have done in the House. We have passed over 400 bills awaiting action in the Senate, most of them with bipartisan support. These bills include measures to protect our elections, the rights of people with pre-existing conditions, common-sense background checks, equal rights for the LGBTQ community, and closing the gender pay gap.
We've also done all we can to hold Donald Trump accountable.
But our colleagues in the Senate failed a critical test today.
Donald Trump invited foreign interference in our election, tried to cover it up, and in doing so, betrayed his oath and the American people.
Our founders feared that this day would come -- it's why they trusted us, the people, with our republic … if we can keep it.
Like you, I believe that our democracy is worth it. I believe that the rule of law matters. I believe that right matters. I also know that it isn’t easy.
It is clear that we have more work to do, and we cannot continue to make progress without you.
We cannot lose hope. We cannot give up. I'm ready to keep fighting, and I hope that you are with me.
I’m running for re-election to continue to fight for our Constitution, our community, and the country. Please join me in this fight. We cannot do it without you.
Sincerely,
Mary Gay
