Dear John, This Spring marks a milestone for the Grassroots Leadership community and me. I come to you as a woman of color, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, college graduate—a person directly impacted by the criminal injustice system.
That is why I started working at GRL in 2018 as the Texas Advocates for Justice Statewide Coordinator. I believe it is my duty to serve communities who are affected the most by the carceral system, and to be a voice for those that do not have a voice at this time and help change policies and practices that perpetuate mass incarceration. Since then, I’ve seen GRL take huge leaps.
It was three years ago that my former co-conspirator Claudia Muñoz and I became the first directly-impacted women of color to lead GRL. It's been a whirlwind of emotions. We've experienced many changes, heartbreaks, and victories as our community endured the generational targets on our backs. Yet, because of you, the brilliance of GRL staff and leaders, and the support from our donors and funders, we stand tall in our shared brilliance and mission to transform cities into beacons of support and care.

This year, GRL will celebrate our one-year anniversary of setting institutional roots in Texas. The ownership of the building institutionalizes the legacy and lineage of the many members, organizers, and leaders that make GRL the organization it is today -- an organizing hub for future generations and leaders. I am especially proud of the resilience, hard work and dedication our team has to fight against oppressive systems that debilitates and destroys our communities.
Moving forward, GRL will continue fighting back against harmful policies that criminalize Black and brown people and move Harris and Travis County leaders to invest resources that prioritize care in our communities over punishment.
I invite you to celebrate our incredible milestone and tune into our progress to date by joining us for our 1st annual Reclaiming Our Roots Saturday, May 20th. I hope you can join us. |

John,
Desde entonces, he visto a Grassroots Leadership dar grandes pasos.
