ROAD RESURFACING UNDERWAY ON LA JOLLA PARKWAY
The much-anticipated repaving of La Jolla Parkway has officially begun, bringing relief to residents and visitors alike. La Jolla Parkway is a major artery with 60,000 cars passing through every day. The La Jolla Parkway repaving was my Fiscal Year 2023 budget priority, and we are getting it done.

La Jolla Parkway serves as a gateway for residents, employees, and visitors to the beaches and shoreline parks, making its upkeep essential for the community and the city. This project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Mayor Todd Gloria and Congressman Scott Peters, who secured federal funds for this project. The project is estimated to cost $2.1 million and involves a new three-inch reinforced asphalt concrete overlay. As long as the weather holds, work will be completed before Memorial Day weekend.

La Jolla Parkway is not the only District 1 street being repaired. I pushed for the Hillside Drive improvements to prevent trucks from getting stuck, major slurry seal work is happening in the Village, and throughout Pacific Beach, and 32 streets in Del Mar Heights are being repaved. Major road repair work is planned next year in Carmel Valley, La Jolla, and Pacific Beach.

IMPROVING STREETLIGHTS IN PACIFIC BEACH
Streetlights were failing faster than we could repair them, and your elected officials united to solve the problem. Earlier this month, I joined Congressmember Scott Peters, Mayor Todd Gloria, and Pacific Beach (PB) community leaders to celebrate the $3.5 million federal award for the City’s "Light Up San Diego Streetlight Improvement Project." $2 million will be dedicated to Pacific Beach.

With the new funding, PB’s streetlight system will be upgraded to be more energy-efficient and reliable. City crews will replace outdated wiring, add tamper-proof covers, and install energy-efficient bulbs in the coming year. Circuits will be converted to dual circuits to ensure the lights stay on in case of one malfunction.

EARTH MONTH CELEBRATIONS 2024
Earth Month serves as a reminder of my commitment to sustainability, resiliency, and my dedication to the challenges facing our community.

I had the privilege of participating in three events: the 21st Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup hosted by I Love a Clean San Diego; City of San Diego Arbor Day; and the International Dark
Sky Week celebration hosted by the San Diego County Chapter of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA). These events highlight the need to protect and enhance our environment.

As the chair of the City’s Environment Committee, I am actively supporting, strengthening, and funding the city’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and
Resilient SD Plan. I am working to establish policies that drive us toward sustainability, including an Implementation Plan to achieve our CAP goals and a prioritization policy to ensure thoughtful allocation of city resources. As Chair of the San Diego Community Power Board of Directors, I am committed to delivering 100% renewable energy to your homes and businesses.

There are many ways we can be effective in our efforts to create a sustainable future, it's up to all of us to work individually and collectively. As a new grandfather, I am further committed creating positive impacts. Let Earth Month be a call to action to continue working towards a sustainable future.
CITY LAUNCHES AUTOMATIC ROAD ANALYZER & REVOLUTIONIZES ROAD MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
Fixing the roads in District 1 is one of my top priorities, and we’ve been making steady progress. Building upon the momentum, the city has invested in two Automatic Road Analyzer Vans with cutting-edge technology that will help the city operate more efficiently, improving our road maintenance and repair program.

The new vans are currently driving around San Diego, gathering real-time and comprehensive data on the condition of every city street. With better data, we can make better decisions to improve our worst roads while keeping our good roads from falling into disrepair, ensuring your tax dollars are used efficiently and effectively. THE FISCAL YEAR 2024 "GETTING IT DONE" BUDGET
May formally kicks off “Budget Season” in the City of San Diego and we encourage you to participate in the process. On Thursday, May 11, I am co-hosting a virtual District 1 Budget Discussion with the City’s Independent Budget Analyst. You can learn more about the Mayor’s Proposed Fiscal Year 2024 Budget, my Budget Priorities, as well as share your priorities on city services and city projects. Please RSVP here.

The City Council will also host various Budget hearings from now until June 12th, providing more chances for you to participate. Please find a detailed schedule of these public hearings here.
50 YEARS IS TOO LONG FOR DEL MAR HEIGHTS
Last month, we took an important step towards improving the infrastructure of Del Mar Heights by resurfacing 32 residential streets, covering a total of seven miles. These full asphalt overlays addressed the lack of street repairs for nearly 50 years. This is another example of our ongoing commitment to upgrading and maintaining our city's roads in every community.
