John,

As an Emergency Room Physician in West Philadelphia, I see the devastating effects of violence in our community every day. And frankly, I am tired.

I’m tired of seeing children on an operating table when they should be at school or on the playground. I’m tired of informing families that their loved one has been shot or killed. And I’m tired of the insufficient effort that has been placed to the underpinning to the violence that plagues this city.

That is why I’m supporting Helen Gym for Philadelphia’s next Mayor, and I’m humbly asking you to join me on May 16th.

Helen's public safety plan is not only practical, but visionary.

Her proposals are specific and action-oriented, and as a longtime medical scholar, I appreciate that they are grounded in science, research, and data. I believe that approach is essential if we’re going to make a real difference in our community.

Important steps in Helen’s plan include deploying more mental health first responders on the streets, promoting more detectives to solve crimes, reducing 911 response times, and cleaning and greening neighborhoods.

Working in an Emergency Department can be pretty grim, but when I read Helen's plan, I felt renewed with optimism. I’m confident Helen will be an effective leader — one who will work tirelessly to make our community safer and more equitable.

But Helen and I can't make this change alone. We need your support to make Helen's public safety vision a reality. That’s why I’m asking:

Please add your name to pledge to vote for Helen, and her transformative public safety agenda, on or before May 16th. Every vote for Helen is a vote for safer schools, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

Philadelphians deserve to be represented by someone who will always put our city first and someone who will prioritize their health and safety.

Emergency medical staff like me see lives cut short by violence far too often, and it doesn’t have to be this way. Please join me to support Helen and her plan to make us all safer.

Thank you,
Benjamin Abella, M.D.
