Putin is wanted for war crimes , but that’s not stopping him planning a visit to South Africa. He’s betting South Africa will shirk its legal duty to arrest him – and the government is deciding what to do right now! Massive public pressure could make a difference – so let’s build a million strong global call for South Africa to make crystal clear it will arrest Putin if he goes ahead with the trip. When this is huge we’ll splash it all over South Africa’s media!

Dear friends,

The world held its breath when the International Criminal Court issued

an arrest warrant against Putin for war crimes involving children. But unless he’s arrested, we won’t be any closer to justice.

Putin’s betting that won’t happen. That’s why he’s planning to visit South Africa in August – even though the government there has a legal duty to arrest him. If the trip goes ahead, it’ll be a victory for impunity everywhere!

But we can change that. The South African government appears divided over what to do, and a massive global outcry now could make the difference.
Let’s build a million voices urging South Africa to make crystal clear that Putin will be arrested if he steps off the plane – when our call is huge, we’ll take it straight to South Africa’s president and the newspapers he reads over breakfast! Sign and share now – let’s stand up for justice:

South Africa: arrest Putin ( [link removed] )

Holding Putin to account might seem a long shot, but

war criminals and dictators have faced justice before. Nazi leaders stood trial in Nuremberg, Chilean dictator Pinochet was arrested in the UK, and Serbian war criminal Mladić was sentenced to life in prison. We cannot afford to give up on justice!

Now is our moment to strike. South Africa’s president has threatened to walk away from the International Criminal Court, and then promptly backtracked. Now a government official is saying that Putin should stay away or face arrest. The story is getting media attention and South Africa is under pressure to clarify their position – a million voices standing for justice could see South Africa vowing to arrest Putin!

The decision is being made right now.So add your name now, and let’s demand South Africa sides with Ukraine’s children over Putin by making it clear that he will face arrest if he enters South Africa!

South Africa: arrest Putin ( [link removed] )

After Russia launched its illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Avaaz community responded with millions-strong calls to end the war, put Putin on trial, and return Ukraine’s stolen children. Now we must do all we can to see him face justice – so let’s come together again.

With determination,
Ruth, Luis, Bert, and the entire team at Avaaz
