We just wrapped up our seventh Second Chance Month in April, and we’re still celebrating all of the ways that you showed up for those who are ready to rebuild their lives and need a second chance.
Churches around the country shared second chance sermons and stories with their congregations. Glad Tidings Church of God in Christ in Hayward, California, was our official Second Chance Sunday host on April 30, and Bishop J.W. Macklin brought a powerful message of hope to his congregation. National Community Church in Washington, D.C., also highlighted Second Chance Month in their church service on April 2. Pastor Joel Schmidgall shared
a message on second chances that featured a testimony from a returning citizen, Tyrone, who discussed some of the challenges faced by those being released from prison.
On April 15, Prison Fellowship held a Second Chance Month Prayer Walk in Columbus, Ohio. People from around the state came together, starting at the Ohio Statehouse, to walk and pray for those in need of a second chance. At the event, speakers shared their personal second chance stories, and a team from Rock City Church led worship.
We also had a successful #BeTheKey social media campaign, where thousands of churches, organizations, and people, including well-known celebrities such as musical artist Lecrae and Salem Radio host Brandon Tatum, shared their own reasons for celebrating Second Chance Month. It was so heartening to see messages proclaiming how each of us can be the key to unlocking second chances for those facing barriers to success. Thanks to everyone who helped make this our best Second Chance Month yet!
We’ve got more exciting events going on this week as we celebrate Mother’s Day with those inside and outside of prison. We’d love for you to watch our Mother’s Day special, which premieres on YouTube on Mother’s Day and will be available on our Floodlight platform for women in prison to view. It features intimate perspectives from formerly incarcerated women on the experience of mothering from behind bars and building a new life in Christ—you won’t want to miss it!
This special video content is only one way we support parents in prison. Through Prison Fellowship Angel Tree, we help moms and dads strengthen their bonds with their children all year round. One Angel Tree parent, Samira, shares:
My daughter felt more connected to me to know that her mother had not forgotten her. That’s extremely important to a child, for them to know that their parents have not forgotten about them, and that no matter where their parents are, that their parents love them. My daughter had a great Christmas, and I really thank Prison Fellowship for that.
Your ongoing prayers and support ensure that even on holidays like Easter and Mother’s Day, which can be difficult, people in prison know they are loved by our Lord and Savior. Thank you for being a part of God’s work inside and outside of prison.
Praising Him,
JAMES J. ACKERMAN President and Chief Executive Officer
