Hi from the data boiler room! It’s Ann Mei and the Analytics Team at Pete for America’s HQ in South Bend.
We're still waiting for the full data set and official results from the Iowa Democratic Party, but we wanted to give you a little insight into what we're seeing so far with 75% of precincts reporting.
On the Analytics team, we are interested not only in how many votes we receive, but also who and where those votes are coming from. That can tell us a lot about a candidate’s prospects down the line.
Based on the rules of the Iowa Caucuses, a candidate must have the support of at least 15% of everyone at a caucus in order to be viable and be eligible to win delegates. One thing that has stood out to us is that Pete was viable in almost 88% of precincts. That means he has built the broadest coalition. (Our colleagues on the Email Team tell us this is where we should put a donate link. Click right here if you can make a donation to support Pete and help us keep growing this broad coalition.) Why does broad support matter? [[link removed][[link removed]] It means a candidate can appeal to many people in many places, and thereby bring in the voters that Democrats will need to beat Trump. [[link removed][[link removed]]
Pete has built a broad coalition geographically -- across urban, suburban, and rural areas. He is also popular in districts that are liberal, conservative, and everything in between.
We can't wait to dig in with you as we get more results. Until then, know this: You are an important part of the campaign that can beat Donald Trump. That's what the data says. [[link removed][[link removed]]
Thanks and more soon,
Ann Mei Chang and the Analytics Team
