A default on our national debt would be catastrophic, John.

It would weaken the United States by throwing millions of people out of work, cutting over 40% out of the stock market, and ultimately leading to a deep and sustained recession.

Chris knows that defaulting on our debt would be crushing for American families, but House Republicans are demanding unacceptable cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. We need to end the hostage negotiations over our debt ceiling.

Subject: Hostage negotiations over our debt ceiling# [#]

Team,

Last week, Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans narrowly passed a bill that slashed critical spending and showed their intent to roll back programs critical for the American people.

McCarthy's plan would lay off 30,000 state and local police officers, cause nearly 1 million seniors to lose access to Meals on Wheels, cut SNAP benefits for vulnerable families, cut life-saving PACT Act provisions for veterans. Those are just a handful of the unacceptable cuts.

Chris knows that defaulting on our debt would be crushing for American families, but engaging in hostage negotiations is not the answer we need. We need to take action that enables us to keep our country's promises and find a solution together.

Chris knows it's time to stop this abuse of our debt ceiling from ever happening again. That's why he introduced the Protect our CREDIT Act , a bill that will change how the debt ceiling is raised, making it easier for the executive branch to prevent a default and harder for a group of politicians to hold our economy hostage.

Do you support Chris's legislation to make sure that far-right extremists can’t hold the debt ceiling hostage? Take our one-question poll: [link removed]

Thank you,

Team Coons
