John,
Just now, Republicans voted to acquit Donald Trump of the articles of impeachment against him, even though they refused to hear from a single witness.
Three years ago, Donald Trump was elected despite receiving 2.9 million fewer votes than his Democratic rival. And, today, we watched Senate Republicans―who represent 15 million fewer Americans than their Democrat counterparts―make a stone cold power grab and let him off the hook despite overwhelming evidence that he committed impeachable offenses.
We can’t force Trump out of office through impeachment―but let’s focus on what we can do. We can remember that our democracy does not begin or end with the presidency; there are real, concrete actions we can take today to make progress in the states and safeguard against federal chaos.
Right now, our biggest opportunity lies in the one place that will lay the foundation for electoral and policy victories for the next decade: state legislatures.
2020 is the last chance for Democrats to win power in the states before the redistricting process begins in 2021. And, importantly, by working in states, we are also getting out the vote for those crucial up-ballot races. In 2020 we are focusing on states that have critical congressional races and are key presidential battlegrounds.
There is no better place to invest your time and resources right now. Please donate $20.20 now to help us drive critical presidential turnout, end gerrymandering, and build progressive power in 2020.
There are many injustices in our country that have taken decades to reverse course. This is one of them, but we will continue to work tirelessly, through setbacks, knowing that one day, the tide will turn because we continued to work strategically, and we never gave up.
We have fewer than nine months until we can vote Trump out and vote a slew of great Democrats in at the state level. Let’s do them both at the same time.
In solidarity,
Rita
