We know the American Dream starts on Main Street, not Wall Street. Yet, massive tax cuts for billionaires and giant corporations -- along with losses of union-supported livable wage job -- have led to a $50 trillion transfer of wealth from working class people's homes and retirement accounts to the uber-rich.
It's sinful.
If it wasn't for billionaries' tax cuts and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, our national debt today would be zero, instead of over $30 trillion. There are other ways of addressing the national debt than cutting services to those who need it the most.
Holding the deficit ransom if Democrats don't agree - also immoral.
In total, the debt ceiling has been revised 78 times since the '60s. Since 1960, Republicans have led a vote to revise the debt ceiling 49 times. Defaulting on our debt would result in an immediate recession.
There are other ways to address our national debt.
We must spend wisely, help people in need, and support small businesses, families, and workers. This fight starts in districts like ours, in the rural heartland, where small town America thrives.
Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula need a fighter in Congress; someone who can stand up to the corporate big wigs and lobbyists, and I'm eager for that job.
