Jack, like many digital news media outlets, Daily Kos once relied primarily on advertising to cover our expenses like staff, website maintenance, and all the other costs of running a business.

Unfortunately, also, like many other news media outlets, we saw our advertising income tumble over the past decade. There are various reasons for this: Big Tech taking an ever growing share of the advertising revenue, changes in social media algorithms, and people just consuming news differently.

At that time, we were facing some hard financial choices, one of which was layoffs. Instead, we reached out to our readers and activists to ask for their support. The response was overwhelming, and today, community donations make up over half of our revenue.

Today, advertising still makes a big chunk of our revenue, however, that chunk continues to shrink. With the uncertainty of the economy, many companies are cutting back on their advertising budgets, on top of that, advertisers are paying less for people to see their ads. This all adds up to less revenue to cover our expenses and bills.

The first four months of 2023, Daily Kos has missed our revenue projections. We have been relying more and more on our readers and activists to make up the difference. I know we ask a lot of you, Jack, but can you support our work with a monthly donation of $5?

If you can't commit to a monthly donation, a one-time donation of $5 will still have a huge impact. Please click here to donate.

Thank you for all you do,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
