John, eight people were killed in a mass shooting at an outlet mall near Dallas last night. Seven additional survivors were taken to the hospital, three of whom were in critical condition. Dallas-area medical professionals stated that they’re treating victims as young as five-years-old.
This is unacceptable. These moments of collective trauma are preventable. And this nation is choosing to live with the horror of gun violence.

Following the attack, Sen. Ted Cruz offered up whatever support needed to do justice for those traumatized and forever heartbroken following the latest mass shooting in his state.
What is needed is a nationwide ban on assault weapons. The weapon of choice for mass shooters and the weapon used in this attack.
What is needed is policy, action, and change, not thoughts and prayers.
What is needed is mandatory licensing and training for gun owners.
What is needed is the required safe storage of all guns.
Gun violence is a critical and preventable public health epidemic. And it will only continue to grow as states–like Texas–roll back common sense prevention methods that ensure everyone’s safety.
