Greetings Michigan Democrats!
Michigan Democrats are delivering for the people of Michigan. Most recently, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Democrats in the Legislature have increased funding [[link removed]] for first responders, invested in [[link removed]] Community Violence Intervention programs , launched [[link removed]] Operation Safe Neighborhoods to get illegal firearms off the street, and enacted common sense gun safety laws [[link removed]] . Our Democratic majority in the State Legislature is passing monumental legislation [[link removed]] that gets relief and results for Michiganders across the state. Michigan Democrats did the hard work last election cycle and are seeing the fruits of our labor. The Michigan Democratic Party continues to work on the ground and uplift the good work of our elected officials like Governor Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and our Democratic Caucuses in the State House and State Senate. However, our work is not finished, and we need Democrats across the state to continue to organize in their respective communities.
This month, the Michigan Democratic Party is hosting our 2023 Legacy Dinner: Democrats Deliver honoring the legacy of Senator Debbie Stabenow [[link removed]] on May 20th in Detroit . I am proud to announce that our Special Guest for the event will be U.S. Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona. This event will be a celebration of service and an opportunity for Democrats across the state to support the great work ahead - please join us [[link removed]] .
At our April Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC) meeting, we unanimously approved the Michigan Delegate Selection and Affirmative Action Plan that lays out the process for selecting delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. I’m excited we have approved our new delegate selection plan, and the party looks forward to sending a diverse and inclusive delegation to represent Michigan. You can review our new delegate selection plan here. [[link removed]] Finally, I encourage you to download and listen to our weekly podcast: Party on the Peninsulas with MDP Chair Lavora Barnes [[link removed]] . Over the past weeks, I have spoken to dynamic lawmakers who are passing comprehensive legislation that makes Michigan better for hardworking families. This week, I had the opportunity to chat with State Senator Sara Anthony to discuss her role as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and her bill to expand the rights of ethnic minorities to reflect their heritage and culture in a small-but-important way: through their personal appearance. Be sure to download and listen to our weekly podcast here [[link removed]] . We must spread awareness of the great work Michigan Democrats are doing and hold the Michigan GOP accountable for their obstructionist tactics and extreme policy agenda.
Onward,

Lavora Barnes

Your Voter Protection Team is rolling into May with a Spring in our step! We had a terrific discussion at our debut VoPro On the Go last month--thank you to everyone who came out and shared their information, knowledge, and experience! We covered a lot of ground, including the implementation of Prop 2, clerk engagement, and what it was like to be inside an AVCB last year.
With the legislature taking action to implement Prop 2 and elections coming up in August and November, there is a lot of news in the VoPro world right now. We'll give a quick briefing about what's happening statewide and then turn it over to you to hear what's going on in your area. Join us for our next VoPro On the Go on Thursday, 5/18, at 7 pm. Sign up here [[link removed]] .
We are really excited about this meeting because we will be in-person and on Zoom! If you are in the area, please join us in person at the Berrien County Dems' office in St. Joe! Folks from surrounding counties are very welcome; we'd love to see you there. But don't worry if that's not your neck of the woods, you can join us via Zoom this month and look for us to be in your area soon. Sign up for the event (in-person or via Zoom) here [[link removed]] !
Huge thanks to the Berrien County Dems for hosting us in May! If you're interested in hosting an upcoming VoPro On the Go, let us know: [email protected] [[email protected]] .
