Just before the new year, we flagged concerns with National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) proposed strategic plan and encouraged advocates to highlight NIMH’s failure to focus on severe mental illness. Yesterday, NIMH Director Josh Gordon noted that instead of the few hundred responses they expected, NIMH received over 6,000 responses!
Thank you to everyone who submitted a response or helped spread the word.
Our work to encourage aBedInstead has also recently received powerful support from both the American Psychiatric Association and National Sheriffs Association.

AAP President Bruce Schwartz highlighted the psychiatric bed shortage crisis in a series of meetings with the Trump Administration, HUD and Congress. Citing our stats on bed loss, Dr. Schwartz noted “the entire system is driven by the availability of inpatient beds, especially public beds.”
A new All Sheriffs’ Authority mental health report calls for the elimination of the IMD exclusion, noting “it prevents communities from funding needed treatment beds."
Thank you to everyone who has already signed our pledge to support increased access to inpatient beds. Haven’t signed yet? It’s not too late – click here
