Friend --
Our February General Meeting will
take place this Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 am – noon at Ant Hall (2320
Caniff, Hamtramck).
We will be discussing a proposal
for new chapter bylaws. Our current bylaws can be found here. The proposed new bylaws can be reviewed here. We will not be voting on new bylaws at
this meeting, but wish to introduce them so everyone has a chance to
take a look, raise questions, discuss and provide feedback before we
revisit them in March, hopefully for a vote. If you have immediate
feedback, please email it to [email protected].
Also this Saturday, we will briefly
talk about submitting applications to the new Michigan Independent Redistricting
Commission. A
representative from the group that got this measure on the ballot will
be in attendance to answer questions, and several of our DSA members
who are notaries will bring their equipment to notarize applications.
If you received an application in the mail and would
like to apply to the commission, bring your application on
Saturday. Reminder that this
is a paid position. There will also be an opportunity to apply
Saturday even if you did not receive an application in the
mail.
Other topics we will cover
Saturday: DSA for Bernie work, Medicare for All, Media Team, and Labor
working group updates, the upcoming Green New Deal and College for All
Town Halls, and responding to anticipated future visits from Trump to
SE Michigan.
We will be breaking out into working groups as
usual at the end of the meeting.
New Steering Committee
Member! The Detroit DSA Steering Committee is excited to
welcome Diana Hussein to the Steering Committee. Diana will be serving
out the last few months of a vacant seat. Thank you to all the chapter
members who offered to take on this role. We will be electing a new
Steering Committee this summer, so if you have an interest in serving
on the Steering Committee please keep that in mind and consider
running for a seat.
Tonight — Join
Detroit DSA and Wayne State YDSA for the return of Socialist
Night School. Meet at 6 pm in the Student Center Building, room
010. Class begins at 6:30 pm. The topic of tonight’s session is “Black
Politics in Detroit,” led by David Goldberg.
Tomorrow night — Join the DSA for Bernie team during our regular Thursday night phone
bank hours at Red Door Digital, 7500 Oakland Ave, 6:30–8:30 pm.
This week only: we will be discussing plans for future phone banking,
canvassing, happy hours, house parties, tabling and beyond. Then we
will do a bit of phone banking. Hopefully we’ll know the results of
the Iowa caucus by then.
Saturday — After
the DSA General Meeting, many of us will go out to canvass in
Hamtramck for Bernie. Bring a water bottle and dress for the weather.
We will do a training before people head out in pairs. If you’d like
to join us just for the canvass, we’ll start around 12:30 pm, leaving
from Ant Hall.
For the General Meeting, members
and visitors are welcome as always! If you have any accessibility or
childcare needs please email [email protected].
