Here’s some context: Since it was first reported back in 2014, stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) has been eviscerating Florida’s coral reefs and ravaging the Caribbean. Researchers have been stumped by how to stop SCTLD’s rapid spread — that is, up until now.
Scientists at the Smithsonian Marine Station just found that a new bacterial probiotic treatment effectively stopped or slowed SCTLD in nearly two-thirds of the infected coral fragments they tested.
It also prevented the infection from spreading to other coral in all transmission experiments.
Think of it like a vaccine for coral: This probiotic has the potential to protect healthy corals against this deadly disease. And more coral means more protection against extreme environmental changes, like storms and beach erosion.
Good news for our coral reefs has been long overdue, John. That’s why our SEEC Members are working to keep up the fight for more research and support so we can continue implementing solutions to protect critical ecosystems, like our reefs.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
